February 17, 2014 Rants Raves & Diatribes

Ok so writing a blog once a week is not as easy as I thought it would be. First and foremost regardless of how hot the topic is, if it isn’t brief and full of pictures, videos and several other distractions just who the hell do you think is going to read it? Having said that I promise a little morsel at the end of this article. Other than search engines such as google and bing most web sites are so full of distractions one may easily get sidetracked and forget why they visited a site in the first place but those search engines wont forget.

That leads me to my next topic of discussion- privacy.  Since I can remember and yes that includes pre internet days, privacy has always been under attack. This became very clear to me the first time I voted. I was told the voting booth was kept private so that your vote would be private; but if that’s of any importance then why is everyone and their brother trying to find out who I voted for? Does anyone besides me find it annoying that because I gts’d(googled that $#it) some info on ip cameras, now any site that supports google ads is trying to sell me an ip camera. I suppose I think it’s funny that when a friend of mine wanted me to watch a Ron Jeremy video/parody on Miley Cyrus’s Wrecking ball video and kept texting me the you tube link, his phone’s search engine made the leap(based on his profile of 40 yr old man wanting to see a man do that video I guess) that he was gay and started providing him links to gay content. Hahahahahaha. You guessed it He’s not gay. Or is he? After all Google ads thinks he is. Not that there’s anything wrong with being gay. However  is their something wrong when these sites profile you based on your searches? Want more proof then follow this link but readme before you click. The post you are being directed to has Random ads on it. More often than not these ads appear to appeal to the image of the teacher at the blackboard inset in the post. As we’ve seen on our news programs many different levels of government in most developed countries spy on everything. Are they provided with these search profiles? Do they just monitor your ip traffic and make their own profile of you? What if I started researching serial killers? Would I be prompted to visit a site with the promise of the lowest price on arsenic, hand guns, hunting knives etc. etc. Would the FBI, CSIS, MI5 etc. have a profile on me? Do they really want to know I bought some earrings on Groupon for my daughter? Do I want them to know this? Should I care if they know this? Of course I should care. A good spin doctor need only sprinkle a little truth into an otherwise false story and it is believed by many. After all how else can we explain the evening news to  be more and more  like a magazine at the grocery store check out. It has become apparent that without fantastic beyond belief headlines  there is no news. Have we become so desensitized to repeat assaults on our senses that only the extraordinary matters? Uh ya why do you think the news programs of today have changed so radically.

Simple editorials on a topic are not enough nor are they allowed any longer if they differ from the station owners political views ideals etc. Ah but what does all this have to do with privacy you ask? Well lets just say instead of asking our opinion they are telling us what your/our opinion is. That’s right they know that if they expose you to their propaganda enough you will believe it. It goes with the old adage that there is no such thing as bad publicity. As proof, other than name recognition how else do we explain how some of these clowns in your and my municipalities get elected? Are you still not convinced that your privacy is being invaded? type or click this link http://www.google.com and see what displays in your browsers URL location when it resolves. If you reside in the USA  it will stay the same but if you live in Canada it will read http://www.google.ca  Don’t believe me? Click one of the links not associated with the country you are in. I assume google has no problem seeing http://www.google.co.uk   as I am not cross border shopping there. Ahhh now if in the absence of other media, and if you didn’t get lost following those links I still have your attention then you are close to becoming a believer. One of the few and probably of little consequence as I do not have the power, money, or name recognition to refute these huge media giants. However one form of protection is available and I did a short little blog on it earlier without realising or making the connection to this need. That’s right I spoke on the use of virtual ip’s to get content restricted to a country by a web site. other alternatives for activist bloggers and the like are proxy servers or a little birdie just whispered to me that hard coding your dns to an American isp dns will allow you to watch US programming. Well that same technology can be used to fool the  search engines into thinking you’re in another country. Does it also fool the intelligence agencies monitoring your traffic? I doubt it as they monitor the traffic coming in to and out of your ip so going through a virtual ip probably isn’t going to help. But if you just wanna google vacations flying out of Detroit instead of Toronto; when you live 2hrs away from either then you know how aggravating it can be to constantly be given the deals out of Toronto when you know they are hugely more expensive than the same deal is flying out of the USA. Or maybe you just want to see what an American sees when he googles a topic. If that’s the case then the simple solution for Canadians is to type http://www.google.com/ncr

This in no way protects your privacy but it does get you access to other markets easier and possibly cheaper than the alternatives. If you want real privacy I assume one must live the life of a hermit with no cell phone no internet and oh ya wear a hoody everywhere making sure to never look up for the camera(thank you csi or other us crime shows) Does that sound like fun? Hell no. Does privacy matter? Less and less each day otherwise this internet profiling that is going on would not be legal. Oh ya I still haven’t watched the whole video
