On the cheap one or 2 wireless cams and a computer you can leave on gets you recorded video with emails of stills from the video as they happen. The software client settings for  these have really come a long way! If your ok with router configurations you will be impressed what $60 will get you.

Want higher quality/outdoor night vision/toggle zoom cameras with multi monitor high def and data capture numbers then you need a dvr.

Either way if you want live web visibility from any device then you need a static ip or subscribe to a service such as dynamic dns, this service will track your ip change and keep you connected (most routers work with it)
